Meaning
Network search protocol provides a method for reducing power consumption by increasing the delay between sequential radio scans when a device fails to find a signal. If band scanning backoff is active, the modem suppresses attempts to scan the radio environment for a specific duration. This mechanism prevents the radio from draining the battery during a prolonged loss of coverage.
The duration typically follows an exponential curve to balance the need for rapid recovery with energy efficiency.
Timer Management
Initial timers start at a few seconds. Duration values expand until they reach a maximum cap.
Battery Preservation
A radio module consumes several hundred milliamps during an active search for global navigation or cellular signals. Because a device in an underground vault or a metal enclosure might never see a cell, band scanning backoff ensures the power supply remains stable. Without this delay, the module stays in a high current state until the voltage drops below the functional threshold.
This protects the electrochemical health of the cell during long storage or transit periods.
Search Logic
Modules prioritize known frequencies before attempting a full scan across all supported bands. The backoff resets immediately upon a manual reboot or a physical trigger.
