Meaning
Time domain deviation represents the variance between the ideal and actual temporal width of pulses in a digital signal. Duty cycle distortion quantifies how much the high or low state of a clock cycle shifts from the expected fifty percent duration. This shift occurs due to asymmetric rise and fall times within the transmission circuitry of a connectivity module.
The phenomenon degrades signal integrity by shifting the sampling point of an eye diagram away from the center of the pulse.
Signal degradation
Asymmetry in transistor switching speeds drives the timing error during high frequency operation. Drivers typically exhibit unequal current sourcing and sinking capabilities because of differences in P-channel and N-channel metal oxide semiconductor device characteristics. Such variance causes the signal to cross the threshold voltage at moments that deviate from the target interval.
A fixed offset remains present across the data stream even when the pattern lacks transitions. The error accumulates during transmission through passive interconnects or mismatched load impedances on a board.
Testing procedure
Qualification of physical layer hardware requires accurate observation of the pulse width at the receiver input. Automated test equipment measures the difference between the pulse width and half the period of the clock signal under loaded conditions. Engineers verify compliance during the characterization phase of a design to ensure the hardware supports required data rates without violating setup and hold timing constraints.
Compensation circuits or programmable equalization often adjust the output to counteract the skew introduced by the component.
Integration impact
Thermal gradients on an integrated circuit board alter the carrier mobility within the switching transistors and change the observed offset. A designer accounts for these temperature induced variations to maintain reliable performance across the operating range of the product. The distortion forces a reduction in the allowable timing budget for downstream logic gates within the system architecture.
Signal processing hardware that interprets the edges of a pulse with strict adherence to a periodic reference requires calibration to negate the underlying temporal shift.
