Meaning
Embedded SIM configurations contain the files, cryptographic algorithms and credentials necessary to authenticate a device to a specific mobile network. An eUICC profile operates as a software-based SIM card that can be downloaded, enabled, disabled or deleted over the air on a secure hardware chip. This technology allows a single physical chip to change network operators without requiring manual replacement.
Subscription Architecture
Each profile is stored within a secure domain on the chip, isolated from other profiles to maintain cryptographic security. Only one profile can be active on a single transmitter at any given moment.
Provisioning Protocol
The remote provisioning architecture relies on a secure routing server to deliver the profile payload to the device. During this transaction, the server and the chip execute a mutually authenticated exchange to ensure the profile is not intercepted or modified. Once downloaded, the profile must be enabled by a command from the local application or the management platform.
This transition triggers a reset of the network registration state, forcing the modem to scan for the new carrier’s towers. This flexibility is invaluable for industrial devices shipped globally, as it allows them to be configured for local networks after arrival.
Hardware Integration
Designing the circuit board with a soldered MFF2 form factor chip eliminates the mechanical vulnerabilities of traditional plastic SIM cards. This choice enhances the device’s resistance to vibration, humidity and extreme thermal cycles.
