Meaning
A unique identification code assigned by the Canadian department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development registers a specific corporate entity in the national radio equipment database. Each company must obtain this ISED company number before submitting a hardware certification application.
Identifier Assignment
The department issues the code after verifying the applicant’s company name, mailing address and contact details. An ISED company number is unique to a single legal entity and cannot be shared between separate corporate divisions or subsidiaries. If a company relocates or undergoes a merger, it must update its registration details to keep the number active.
The code consists of a sequence of numeric characters that are prepended to the unique product identifier chosen by the manufacturer.
System Database
The government maintains an online registry where the company details associated with each code are accessible to the public and market surveillance authorities. When a new wireless device is submitted for approval, the testing laboratory uses this number to link the test reports to the correct manufacturer. The ISED company number enables the regulatory agency to trace the origin of any radio equipment that causes interference or fails to meet the safety standards.
This tracking mechanism is required for enforcing compliance across the domestic market.
Regulatory Application
An applicant must appoint a Canadian representative if they do not have a physical presence within the country. This representative’s details are linked to the company record in the system to ensure that there is a local point of contact for legal matters. The ISED company number is required for all classes of transmitter equipment, from low-power sensors to high-power cellular base stations.
This registry ensures that all wireless products in the country are accounted for and linked to a responsible legal entity.
