Meaning
Decoupling components mounted on the underside of a circuit board directly beneath a high-pin-count processor provide a path for low-inductance charge storage. Positioning land side capacitors on the opposite face of the substrate minimizes the loop inductance between the power pins and the charge storage. This configuration is standard in high-performance computing and network switches.
Loop Reduction
Short vertical paths through the circuit board layers provide the lowest possible impedance for current transients. By using land side capacitors, the path length is reduced to the thickness of the board and the height of the component. This arrangement bypasses the long horizontal traces required for surface-mount devices placed around the perimeter of the chip.
Thermal Boundary
Heat dissipation from the processor is often managed by a heatsink on the top side, leaving the bottom side available for components. Because land side capacitors occupy the area beneath the die, they must be low-profile to avoid interference with the socket or the enclosure base. High-temperature ratings are necessary as the devices sit in the thermal shadow of the main silicon.
Placement Precision
Automated pick and place machines require high accuracy to align these components within the dense grid of a ball grid array (BGA). The land side capacitors are often small packages like 0201 or 0402 to fit between the vias. Clearance between the solder joints and the surrounding pads must be maintained to prevent short circuits during the secondary reflow.
