Meaning
Thermoplastic resins with unique molecular alignment properties provide high performance substrates for flexible printed circuits and connectors. Using lcp material allows for extremely thin wall sections in injection molded housings without sacrificing mechanical integrity or dimensional stability. Liquid crystal polymers maintain their properties across a broad temperature range.
Molecular Structure
Rigid rod molecules align in the melt phase to create a highly ordered structure during cooling. Internal molecular orientation gives lcp material a low coefficient of thermal expansion that matches copper, reducing stress on solder joints during thermal cycling. Anisotropic properties mean the material is stronger in the direction of flow.
Circuit Application
Low moisture absorption and a low dielectric constant make this resin ideal for 5G antenna modules and high speed data interfaces. When lcp material is used as a substrate, signal attenuation is significantly lower than that of standard FR4 or polyimide. Thin films of this polymer enable the creation of multilayer flex circuits with high density interconnects, allowing for the integration of complex routing in a smaller physical footprint than traditional materials.
Thermal Stability
High heat deflection temperatures permit the use of lead free reflow soldering processes without deformation of the part. Because lcp material resists most industrial chemicals and solvents, it protects internal electronics in harsh environments. The resin also provides inherent flame retardancy without the addition of halogenated additives.
