Meaning
Digital signal acquisition methods that record high-speed voltage transitions on hardware lines allow engineers to visualize timing relationships between digital interfaces. Obtaining a logic analyzer trace provides a detailed timeline of events on communication buses such as serial peripheral interfaces or inter-integrated circuits. This measurement captures the exact moment a line transitions between high and low states.
It operates by sampling the pins at a frequency much higher than the bus clock.
Data Collection
Attaching the test probes to the board requires accessible test points on the signal lines of interest. The logic analyzer trace begins when the configured trigger condition, such as a specific address pattern or a start bit, is detected. This triggering mechanism prevents the buffer from filling with useless idle bus data.
Protocol Interpretation
Translation software decodes the captured voltage transitions into readable bytes and command names. When analyzing a logic analyzer trace, the developer can verify that the sensor responses match the values specified in the datasheet. This step simplifies the process of finding software driver bugs that cause corrupt data packets.
If the data contains checksum errors, the trace displays the offending bytes in red to highlight the anomaly.
Noise Protection
Shielding the probes from electromagnetic interference prevents false transitions from corrupting the recorded waveform. High-frequency signals on nearby radio antennas can induce noise on long test leads. The designer uses short ground springs rather than long ground wires to maintain a clean signal path to the test equipment.
This setup ensures that the recorded trace accurately represents the physical signal on the board.
