Meaning
Hardware interconnect architecture that facilitates simultaneous communication between multiple bus masters and slaves. A memory bus matrix eliminates the bottlenecks common in traditional shared bus designs by providing parallel paths for data. It is a core component in modern system on chip designs.
Arbitration Logic
Intelligent switching system manages the access priorities when two masters attempt to reach the same slave. The memory bus matrix uses a round robin or fixed priority scheme to resolve these conflicts. This logic ensures that time sensitive peripherals like radio controllers receive the bandwidth they need.
Parallel Path
Dedicated routing channel allows independent transactions to occur at the same time. While a processor accesses instructions from flash, the memory bus matrix enables a direct memory access controller to move data from a sensor to sram. This concurrency significantly improves the total throughput of the system.
The hardware automatically routes the signals based on the address provided by the master. Efficiency increases as more independent paths are utilized by the peripheral subsystems.
Integration Constraint
Physical layout requirement dictates the complexity of the silicon area. Designing a memory bus matrix involves balancing the number of connections against the available power and space. A larger matrix supports more masters but increases the capacitive load on the signals.
