Meaning
Protective storage methods replace the oxygen inside a sealed container with dry nitrogen gas to prevent oxidation and moisture damage to sensitive components. The use of nitrogen purge packaging is common for high-value circuit boards and optical sensors that must be stored for long periods before being assembled. This process maintains a dry and stable environment that preserves the solderability of metal contacts.
Moisture Prevention
Moisture is the primary enemy of bare printed circuit boards because it can penetrate the composite material and cause delamination during high-temperature soldering. By removing both oxygen and water vapor, this method stops corrosion and the growth of intermetallic compounds on the surface pads. This ensures that the components perform correctly when they are finally retrieved for production.
Process Execution
The process is completed using specialized vacuum chambers that draw out the air from the protective bag before injecting the high-purity nitrogen gas. A heat sealer then closes the bag to create an airtight seal. To verify the seal’s integrity, a color-changing humidity card is placed inside the bag so that inspectors can quickly check for leaks before the parts are moved to storage.
Storage Assurance
Long-term storage of spare parts for military and aerospace products relies on this protective measure. It ensures that critical assemblies remain in pristine condition for years.
