Meaning
Mechanical locating components establish precise positional reference between mating metal substrates before final fasteners are secured. An alignment dowel pin achieves this precision by fitting into reamed holes distributed across an enclosure interface.
Mechanical Interface
Shear loads that arise from external vibration are absorbed by these hardened pins, protecting the mounting screws from side-loading. They are typically pressed into one side of the assembly and slip-fit into the mating half during production. This distribution of mechanical duty preserves the structural integrity of the seal across the gasket.
Production Tolerance
Precision machining is required for the mating receiver hole to avoid binding during board-to-enclosure integration. When the spacing between two holes varies even slightly, the resulting friction during mounting can damage internal connectors or prevent the chassis from closing properly. Using one round pin and one diamond-shaped pin prevents this binding while still securing the rotation axis.
Structural Durability
Hardened steel or stainless steel alloys are selected to ensure that the pin does not shear under sudden impacts. If the assembly undergoes high temperature cycling, the difference in thermal expansion between the metal pin and an aluminum chassis must be analyzed to prevent cracking in the housing. Engineers verify these dimensions on the final inspection sheet before the module is approved for the field.
