Meaning
Measurement values indicate the deviation from flatness in a printed circuit board after it has been subjected to thermal stress. A high pcb warpage delta often occurs during the reflow soldering process when different materials in the stackup expand at different rates. This curvature interferes with the placement of large surface mount components.
If the board is too distorted, the solder joints may bridge or fail to connect entirely.
Thermal Influence
Coefficients of thermal expansion for the glass epoxy and the copper layers rarely match perfectly. When a pcb warpage delta exceeds the limits set by industry standards, the board may no longer fit into its enclosure. Balanced copper distribution on both sides of the core helps minimize this effect.
Thick ground planes should be mirrored across the center of the stackup.
Mapping Technique
Optical systems use lasers or shadow moire patterns to map the topography of the surface. Determining the pcb warpage delta involves comparing the highest point of the board to the lowest point. This value is usually expressed as a percentage of the total length or width.
Industry limits typically range between zero point five and one percent for standard boards.
Solder Quality
Flattening the board during assembly is sometimes possible with specialized carriers.
