Meaning
Systematic adjustments ensure the vacuum nozzles of an assembly machine apply the correct downward pressure when mounting components. Proper pick and place force calibration prevents the crushing of fragile ceramic capacitors and the displacement of solder paste. If the force is too light, the part may not seat properly in the paste.
If it is too heavy, the component can fracture or the paste can squeeze out and cause bridges.
Load Cell Verification
Pressure sensors at the head of the machine measure the resistance encountered during the z axis movement. During pick and place force calibration, the software compares these readings against the target values for each component type. Small chips like 0201 resistors require far less force than large integrated circuits.
Regular checks compensate for mechanical wear in the drive motors.
Component Protection
Fragile parts such as glass diodes or micro electro mechanical systems require delicate handling to avoid internal damage. Successful pick and place force calibration allows the machine to adjust its speed and impact for every individual placement. This level of control is necessary for high density boards with varied part sizes.
It reduces the rate of rework and improves the overall yield of the production run.
Feedback Loop
Encoders provide the necessary data to the controller to maintain a constant pressure.
