Meaning
Internal electromagnetic interference generated by digital circuits on a shared printed circuit board. Reduction of platform noise is a primary challenge when integrating high speed processors with sensitive radio receivers.
Digital Interference
Switching currents in the clock lines and data buses create broadband radiation that couples into nearby traces. The presence of platform noise raises the noise floor of the receiver and reduces the effective range of the wireless link. Proper decoupling and layout techniques are used to contain these emissions at the source.
Shielding Requirement
Metal enclosures or grounded planes can block the transfer of energy between the noisy and quiet sections of the board. Effective management of platform noise often requires the use of multi layer pcbs with dedicated ground returns. This physical isolation prevents the digital signals from polluting the antenna feed.
Receiver Sensitivity
Performance of the radio is measured by its ability to detect weak signals in the presence of background interference. High levels of platform noise cause desensitization which can only be fixed by improving the isolation of the radio front end. Verification includes checking the bit error rate while the main application processor is running at full speed.
This testing identifies the specific software states that create the most electrical interference.
