Meaning
Non-rechargeable electrochemical cells utilize lithium metal anodes to deliver high energy density and extremely low self-discharge rates in remote devices. Installing a primary lithium battery provides a reliable power source for industrial IoT sensors and utility meters that must operate unattended for a decade. This chemistry is designed for single-use applications and cannot be recharged safely.
Electrochemical Property
The high cell voltage of approximately three volts allows system designers to run microcontrollers without complex voltage boost converters. Because the primary lithium battery exhibits a low self-discharge rate of less than two percent per year, it remains viable even after years of storage or minimal use.
Discharge Profile
Voltage remains remarkably stable throughout most of the usable lifespan of the cell, then drops rapidly as the chemistry is exhausted. Monitoring the remaining capacity of a primary lithium battery requires counting coulombs or tracking operational runtimes, as simple voltage measurements do not give an accurate state-of-charge reading until the cell is almost empty. This flat discharge behavior prevents predictable low-battery warnings without dedicated monitoring hardware.
Thermal Tolerance
Industrial and outdoor environments require reliable performance across a broad temperature range. Utilizing a primary lithium battery with a specialized electrolyte allows the device to function from sub-zero winter temperatures to high summer heat, protecting the system against voltage delay and passivation.
