Meaning
Electromagnetic interaction between closely spaced antenna elements in a multi-antenna array defines a physical coupling phenomenon in radio frequency engineering. In MIMO smart devices and compact wireless modules, spatial mutual coupling transfers radiated energy from an active antenna element into adjacent passive or active antenna structures. The phenomenon applies within the reactive near-field and radiating near-field regions surrounding integrated antenna arrays.
Radiation Distortion
Energy coupled between adjacent antenna elements alters the input impedance, reflection coefficient and total active reflection coefficient of individual array ports. When spatial mutual coupling occurs in compact IoT enclosures, near-field interactions skew the far-field radiation pattern and reduce total radiation efficiency. Antenna engineers mitigate coupling effects by introducing parasitic decoupling structures, neutralization lines or defected ground structures between array elements.
Printed circuit board designers maintain minimum physical isolation distances between multi-band antennas to preserve channel capacity in compact MIMO systems. High mutual coupling increases correlation coefficients between channel paths, degrading dynamic channel selection, beamforming, spatial multiplexing or diversity reception performance in high-throughput wireless links.
Thermal Load
Dissipation of coupled RF power in non-terminated adjacent ports generates unexpected localized heating on printed circuit boards. System designs route coupled power into matched dummy loads or optimize matching networks to avoid over-stressing front-end low-noise amplifiers. Impedance matching circuits require careful tuning to offset mutual impedance shifts caused by tight element spacing.
Measurement Standard
Anechoic chamber measurements quantify mutual coupling using S-parameter matrix data recorded across operating frequency bands. Engineering qualification reports document port-to-port isolation values in decibels to confirm compliance with multi-antenna system specifications.
