Meaning
Time delay between a temperature change and the application of a corrective frequency shift in an oscillator. Tcxo compensation latency occurs because heat must physically move from the environment to the crystal and the sensor before the logic can react. This delay can lead to temporary frequency errors during rapid thermal transitions.
Thermal Lag
Structural elements of the oscillator package determine the speed of heat transfer. A sensor mounted far from the quartz blank experiences a different temperature than the crystal during a ramp. This mismatch creates a dynamic error that is not captured by static calibration.
Small, highly integrated packages reduce this distance and the associated latency.
Processing Delay
Time required for the digital logic to calculate a new trim also contributes to the delay. If the sensor is only read every few seconds, the oscillator may drift significantly between updates. Increasing the sampling rate improves accuracy but raises the power consumption of the device.
Error Accumulation
Peak frequency deviation during a thermal event is proportional to the latency and the rate of temperature change. In a system experiencing a ramp of 10 degrees per minute, a 5-second latency can result in a large offset. Minimizing latency is a primary goal in the design of oscillators for mobile and outdoor equipment.
The cumulative phase error grows as the correction delay increases.
