Meaning
Federal regulation in the United States that establishes the requirements for modular transmitter approval. Title 47 CFR Section 15.212 allows wireless module manufacturers to obtain a single certification that permits the module to be integrated into various host devices without retesting the radio. This rule governs the physical construction of the module, including shielding and power supply regulation.
Shielding Requirement
Physical isolation of the radio circuitry prevents coupling with the host device. The regulation mandates that the modular transmitter must have its own radio frequency shielding to block external interference. This shield must be a metallic cover that solder-mounts directly to the printed circuit board over the transmitter components to ensure complete isolation from other circuitry.
Host Integration
Products utilizing a certified module must comply with specific labeling instructions. The external housing of the host device must display a statement indicating that it contains the approved transmitter module. This label provides traceability and ensures that inspectors can verify the compliance of the finished assembly.
Authorization Pathway
Obtaining a modular grant requires submitting test reports demonstrating compliance with all technical conditions. If a module lacks a shielded enclosure, it can only receive a limited modular approval. This limited grant restricts the module’s use.
