Meaning
Standardized ASCII text formats allow for the exchange of frequency-dependent network parameters between different electronic design automation tools. A touchstone file typically uses the .sNp extension, where N represents the number of ports in the measured or simulated component. This format has become the industry standard for sharing the performance characteristics of high-frequency connectors, filters, and antennas.
The standard is intended for small-signal linear behavior and does not provide an accurate model for non-linear power amplifier distortion.
Data Structure
The header of the document specifies the frequency units, the parameter type, and the characteristic impedance of the system. Inside a touchstone file, rows of numerical data represent the real and imaginary parts or the magnitude and angle of the s-parameters at specific frequency points. This clear organization allows software tools to interpolate between points for more accurate system-level simulations.
Port Configuration
Complex components like multi-port switches or MIMO antenna arrays require files that can describe many interactions simultaneously. A touchstone file for a four-port device contains sixteen separate s-parameter combinations to fully characterize every possible signal path and crosstalk relationship. The port numbering in the file must match the physical layout of the circuit to avoid errors in the final analysis.
Simulation Usage
Importing these files into circuit simulators allows for modeling the behavior of a product before a physical PCB is manufactured. Because the touchstone file provides a black box representation of a component, it allows for the analysis of proprietary parts without revealing their internal design. This capability is essential for optimizing the matching networks of radio modules and for predicting the impact of the enclosure on antenna performance.
Validation of the file involves checking for passivity and causality to verify the data is physically realistic. Correct data at this stage reduces the number of prototyping cycles and speeds up the certification process.
