Meaning
International commercial agreements define the point at which risk and transport costs transfer from the seller to the buyer. Under the delivered duty paid incoterm, the seller assumes the maximum possible obligation by taking responsibility for all freight, duties, taxes, and import clearance fees up to the designated destination. The buyer is only responsible for unloading the cargo once it arrives at the specified facility.
Logistical Burden
Sellers must manage foreign customs regulations and deal with local authorities directly to clear the incoming components. This requirement involves high risk if the destination country has complex import barriers or unpredictable duty rates. The shipping company must therefore have an established presence or a reliable broker in the region.
Financial Planning
All transport fees, export taxes, and import clearance costs are bundled into the initial price of the goods. This makes budgeting simpler for the buyer’s procurement team because there are no hidden customs clearance charges or sudden transport tariffs to pay upon arrival. However, the seller will add a premium to the sale price to cover this risk and the administrative overhead of managing international freight.
Operational Delivery
Hardware manufacturers use this shipping arrangement when they need a guaranteed delivery schedule for critical sub-assemblies without administrative delays at the border. The transaction is complete only when the parts are deposited at the buyer’s dock and verified against the shipping invoice. This arrangement aligns the supplier’s delivery duty with the start of the final assembly sequence.
