Meaning
Digital signal processing techniques determine the difference between the carrier frequency of an incoming signal and the local oscillator of the receiver. Accurate frequency offset estimation is required to align the demodulator and recover the transmitted data bits without error. The radio hardware performs this calculation during the preamble phase of every incoming packet.
Signal Processing
Algorithms analyze the phase change of the received symbols over a known period. To perform frequency offset estimation, the receiver compares the phase of the incoming preamble against the expected local reference. This result is then used to shift the digital baseband signal back to the center of the filter.
Radio Feedback
Real-time corrections are applied to the local clock source or the digital mixers. Frequency offset estimation provides a numerical value that the firmware can use to calibrate the local oscillator for future transmissions. This closed-loop system ensures that the two devices remain closely aligned even as the environment changes.
System Robustness
Fast estimation is necessary to handle packets from different transmitters that may each have their own frequency error. In mobile applications, frequency offset estimation also helps compensate for the doppler shift caused by the movement of the device. Without this estimation, the signal-to-noise ratio would degrade as the frequency misalignment increases.
