Meaning
Training fields designed for channel estimation in high-density multi-antenna wireless local area networks enable accurate MIMO demodulation. In the IEEE 802.11ax standard, the high efficiency ltf provides the receiver with the necessary reference signals to estimate the MIMO channel matrix. This field is optimized to support up to eight spatial streams and various subcarrier spacings.
Subcarrier Optimization
The density of the subcarriers requires precise channel estimation to maintain subcarrier orthogonality. Because the subcarrier spacing is narrower in these high-density modes, the receiver must resolve finer frequency-domain details. The training sequence is designed to cover every active subcarrier to ensure that the channel estimation algorithm can compute accurate equalization coefficients across the entire channel band.
MIMO Scaling
Multiple spatial streams require multiple training fields to ensure that the receiver can distinguish the channel from each transmit antenna. The system can transmit multiple high efficiency ltf symbols sequentially or apply orthogonal covering codes to separate them. This scaling ensures that even with eight antennas, the receiver can decouple each individual spatial path.
Symbol Duration
The duration of the training field is scalable to accommodate different multipath scenarios. Shorter durations are chosen for indoor channels with low delay spread to maximize efficiency. Longer durations are used for outdoor environments to provide robustness against long delay spreads.
