Meaning
Dedicated hardware peripheral within a microcontroller that manages the voltage and timing for non-volatile storage access. An internal flash controller translates high level software commands into the complex physical signals required to modify memory cells. It sits between the processor bus and the raw storage array.
Command Logic
State machine handles the sequence of events for reading and writing data. The internal flash controller ensures that the correct programming voltages are applied for the specified duration to avoid damaging the silicon. Software interacts with this logic through a set of memory mapped registers.
Error Correction
Integrated circuitry detects and repairs bit flips caused by noise or aging. Most designs of the internal flash controller include hamming codes or similar mechanisms to verify data integrity during read operations. This feature is a requirement for meeting safety standards in industrial environments.
Access Protection
Security mechanism prevents unauthorized modification of the firmware stored in the device. An internal flash controller can be configured to lock specific sectors against further write or erase cycles. This hardware level protection remains active even if the application software is compromised by a malicious actor.
Many controllers also offer read out protection to stop the extraction of proprietary code through a debug interface. The configuration of these locks is usually permanent once the final production bits are set.
