Meaning
Sealed housings protect internal electronics from dust, dirt, and long term submersion in water under high pressure. An ip68 enclosure represents a high standard for liquid ingress protection in commercial mobile and industrial devices. Manufacturers define the specific depth and duration of the test, which typically exceeds one meter for thirty minutes.
This rating is essential for equipment used in marine, mining, or heavy outdoor environments.
Gasket Performance
Compression seals made of silicone or ethylene propylene diene monomer prevent the entry of contaminants at the joints. In an ip68 enclosure, the design of the seal channel ensures that even under the pressure of deep water, the gasket remains seated. Bolts must apply uniform pressure around the perimeter to avoid gaps.
A single point of failure in the seal leads to internal condensation.
Pressure Equalization
Venting membranes allow air to move in and out of the housing while blocking liquid molecules. Because an ip68 enclosure experiences internal pressure changes during temperature swings, it needs a way to balance the load without sucking in water. These vents use expanded polytetrafluoroethylene to maintain the seal.
This prevents the housing from deforming or the gaskets from blowing out.
Testing Verification
Submersion tanks simulate the conditions of the field by applying air pressure to a dry unit or sinking it in a calibrated pool.
