Meaning
Formal conformity assessment documents issued by an accredited European Notified Body verify that an electronic equipment design meets the essential performance requirements of specific European Union internal market harmonization directives. An original equipment manufacturer obtains a module b certificate under the Radio Equipment Directive or Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive to validate product designs that do not follow fully harmonized standards. The assessment covers intentional radio frequency transmitters, receiver front ends and combined telecommunications apparatus.
The scope stops at the technical design evaluation phase, requiring pairing with subsequent production conformity modules such as Module C, D or F to authorize commercial CE marking.
Assessment Scope
Notified Bodies conduct rigorous technical evaluations of the manufacturer design dossier, analyzing schematic drawings, printed circuit board layouts, bill of materials selections and test reports. Issuance of a module b certificate confirms that the technical design satisfies the essential health, safety, electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum utilization requirements defined in applicable directives. The evaluation provides an independent engineering audit when complete harmonized standards do not exist or when an engineering team applies custom antenna integration solutions.
The resulting certificate lists specific hardware revisions, firmware versions, operational frequency ranges and maximum output power limits.
System Dependencies
Securing a design examination certificate does not grant immediate authority to apply the CE mark or distribute products within the European Economic Area. Commercial distribution mandates pairing the design approval with production control modules that guarantee factory output matches the approved design prototype. Manufacturing quality assurance protocols must preserve structural and functional consistency across mass production runs.
Any subsequent design alteration affecting fundamental radio performance or enclosure shielding requires a formal certificate amendment from the issuing Notified Body.
Integration Risk
System integrators utilizing modular wireless transceivers must determine whether host integration modifications invalidate the existing module b certificate held by the component supplier. Changing antenna trace routing, increasing transmission power tables or mounting the module inside an unshielded plastic enclosure constitutes a substantial design deviation. Such modifications require the host integrator to submit an updated technical construction file to a Notified Body for an independent design examination.
Maintaining a clean compliance trail protects the final product against commercial distribution bans during market surveillance enforcement actions.
