Meaning
Signal processing protocol features in narrow-band internet of things networks increase the range of wireless signals by repeating transmissions at the cost of data rate and power consumption. The activation of NB-IoT coverage enhancement allows devices located in deep indoor or underground environments to establish and maintain connections that would fail on standard networks. This range extension relies on repeated transmission blocks to improve the signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver.
Operational Levels
Networks define up to three different coverage levels based on signal quality. Level zero is used for devices with a normal signal, while levels one and two are used in areas with progressively poorer coverage. The module automatically adjusts its coverage level depending on the signal strength it receives from the base station.
System Consequences
Using higher coverage enhancement levels significantly increases the time and energy required to transmit a single message. Because each packet must be repeated multiple times, the transceiver remains active for a much longer period. This increased activity drains batteries quickly, meaning that devices should be positioned to use the lowest possible coverage level.
Measurement and Tuning
Design teams evaluate the signal environment during installation to optimize the placement of the antenna. Selecting a high-gain antenna can help the device use a lower coverage level, reducing current draw. This optimization balance is critical for maintaining long battery life in remote telemetry networks.
