Meaning
Statistical capability indices measure the actual performance of a manufacturing process over an extended period without assuming that the process is in a state of statistical control. The overall process performance pp ppk helps quality engineers determine whether a production line is meeting design tolerances during high-volume assembly runs. These metrics are calculated using the total standard deviation of the collected sample data.
Statistical Index
While short-term capability indices only account for within-subgroup variation, these long-term indices capture all sources of process variation, including tool wear, material batch changes, and environmental shifts. A value of one point thirty-three or higher is typically required to prove that the process is capable of producing conforming parts. If the value falls below this threshold, the process must be investigated for sources of variation.
LongTerm Assessment
Engineers use these indices to report the real-world capability of a production line to customers. This provides a realistic picture of quality over time.
Quality Verification
The index is calculated by comparing the spread of the process output against the upper and lower specification limits defined in the product design documents. If the distribution is centered between the limits, the two values will be close to each other. This calculation is a required part of the production part approval process.
