Meaning
Off-the-shelf wireless communication components come with pre-approved regulatory grants from agencies like the Federal Communications Commission. Using pre-certified modules allows developers to bypass the lengthy and expensive intentional radiator testing required for custom rf designs. These components are shielded, tuned, and tested by the module supplier prior to market release.
This status remains valid only if the host board design adheres strictly to the module integration guidelines and antenna specifications.
Integration Advantage
Host board layout is simplified because the complex RF routing and impedance matching are contained entirely within the modular shield. Designers only need to provide power, ground, and digital interfaces to establish wireless connectivity in their product. The presence of pre-certified modules reduces the engineering effort required to obtain the overall product approval.
This simplification is highly beneficial for companies that do not have dedicated RF engineering teams.
Regulatory Limit
Compliance inherited from the module manufacturer does not excuse the final product from all testing requirements. The complete assembly must still undergo unintentional radiator testing to ensure that the digital circuitry does not emit excessive noise. Additionally, if the module is used with a different antenna type or at a higher output power than originally approved, the modular certification becomes void.
This requires the buyer to initiate a permissive change process with the regulatory agency.
Production Handover
Quality control documents provided by the module vendor include the FCC ID and industry certifications. These files are integrated directly into the compliance folder of the host product.
