Meaning
Dynamic current extraction patterns define the magnitude, duration, and frequency of power spikes drawn from a battery during operation. The pulse drain profile represents the electrical load of wireless communication modules, which transmit data in high-power bursts and rest in low-power sleep modes. Selecting a battery that cannot sustain these brief, high-current peaks leads to premature voltage drop and system shutdown.
Engineers use this specification to design decoupling capacitor arrays that smooth the load on the cell.
Output Capability
Battery internal resistance restricts the maximum current a cell can supply without excessive voltage drop. Under a demanding pulse drain profile, the battery’s voltage may drop below the system’s cutoff threshold, triggering an unexpected reset. Designing the system requires matching the cell’s chemistry to the duration of these pulse events.
Lithium-ion cells handle transient spikes better than lithium-thionyl chloride cells, which suffer from passivation delays.
Capacity Recovery
Chemical diffusion within the battery limits how fast the cell recovers after a high-energy pulse. Following each spike in the pulse drain profile, the battery voltage slowly returns toward its open-circuit value as ions redistribute across the electrodes. Providing sufficient sleep time between transmissions allows the cell to recover its output capability, maximizing the usable capacity of the pack.
Frequent, continuous pulses without recovery periods degrade the total energy output of the battery. Consequently, scheduling transmissions with longer sleep intervals extends the operational life of remote sensor nodes in the field, reducing maintenance costs.
Profile Simulation
Programmable electronic loads test the endurance of power supplies under simulated field conditions. Evaluating a pulse drain profile involves replicating the exact current waveform of the target device during its transmit and receive cycles. These tests run over thousands of cycles to measure how the battery holds up as it ages.
The resulting voltage curves verify that the system maintains a safe operating margin throughout its operating life.
