Meaning
A rotating platform installed in an electromagnetic compatibility chamber used to hold a device under test while measuring its radiated radio frequency energy. Operating a radiated emissions turntable allows test engineers to evaluate the emissions profile of a product from all horizontal angles during compliance testing. This component is essential for identifying the direction of peak radiation and ensuring the device complies with emissions limits.
Angular Sweep
Revolving platforms rotate through a full three hundred and sixty degrees while the receiving antenna records the electromagnetic field strength. A radiated emissions turntable is synchronized with the receiver software to correlate peak emissions with specific physical angles of the product chassis. This correlation is necessary because circuit board traces, cables, and shielding gaps radiate unevenly in three-dimensional space.
An engineer uses this directional data to locate weak spots in the product’s shielding or ground plane.
Height Search
The rotational sweep is combined with vertical movement of the receiving antenna from one to four meters. This dual-axis measurement captures the maximum emissions from both vertically and horizontally polarized signals. The resulting peak value is the figure recorded in the official compliance report.
Chamber Calibration
High-quality platforms are built from low-reflectivity materials like heavy-duty plastic or wood to avoid distorting the electromagnetic fields. Regular calibration runs verify that the turntable positioning is accurate and repeatable.
