Meaning
Gelatinous polymers provide high dielectric strength and mechanical isolation for electronic assemblies without exerting structural stress during thermal expansion. Applying a silicone gel dielectric provides a soft, self-healing protective layer that insulates high-voltage components while protecting them from moisture ingress. This compound remains highly flexible and does not exert mechanical pressure on delicate wire bonds, making it suitable for sensitive semiconductor packages.
Dielectric Performance
The electrical properties of this material remain stable across a very wide temperature range, preventing dielectric breakdown under high voltage. This stability of the silicone gel dielectric ensures consistent performance in demanding power electronic modules. The high dielectric strength prevents electrical arcing between closely spaced traces on the circuit board.
Self Healing
Physical punctures caused by test probes or transient stresses reseal automatically due to the cohesive nature of the gel. This capability of the silicone gel dielectric maintains the integrity of the protective barrier even after physical inspection. This property makes it an excellent choice for modules that require regular diagnostic probing during development.
Process Application
The two-part liquid gel is dispensed into the component housing and cured at elevated temperatures to form the final elastomer layer. Low viscosity before curing allows the liquid to flow into tiny spaces underneath surface-mount components, ensuring complete coverage. After curing, the material forms a soft gel that absorbs shock and prevents moisture from reaching the active circuitry.
Testing the consistency of the gel after thermal aging ensures that the compound does not dry out or lose its protective properties over time.
