Meaning
Initial molding runs using newly built tooling evaluate the functionality of the mold and the preliminary quality of the molded parts. The t1 trial qualification is the first time plastic is injected into the mold under production conditions to identify mechanical issues in the tool. This process yields the first molded samples for dimensional inspection.
Process Optimization
Parameters are adjusted during this initial run to establish a stable molding window. During a t1 trial qualification, engineers alter temperature and pressure to resolve cosmetic defects.
Dimensional Inspection
The physical parts from this trial are measured to see how closely they match the engineering drawing. To pass the t1 trial qualification, the molded samples are subjected to metrology checks that verify critical dimensions against the CAD model. This analysis reveals where the mold steel must be modified.
Tooling Modification
Steel-safe areas are corrected on the mold plates to bring out-of-tolerance dimensions back into specification. Following a t1 trial qualification, the tooling team modifies the cavity or core blocks through precision machining or electrical discharge machining based on the metrology report. This technical cycle of measurement and modification ensures that subsequent runs produce parts that meet all dimensional specifications, allowing the tool to advance toward final production release.
