Meaning
Diagnostic charts of current consumption over time characterize the electrical energy extraction from a power cell during different operating states of a connected device. This visualization, called a battery drain profile, captures the transitions between deep sleep, idle, and active transmit cycles of wireless modules. It provides the basis for calculating total battery life in IoT devices.
Measurement Methodology
Hardware developers use specialized power analyzers to sample current drawn by the device at high frequencies, often exceeding one hundred kilohertz, during specific software sequences. This high-resolution logging uncovers short current spikes that basic multimeters miss. By mapping these events to firmware execution, the developer determines which tasks, such as booting or network registration, consume the most energy, and then modifies the software to reduce those peaks.
Design Consequence
Precise current mapping ensures that the selected battery chemistry can sustain the required current pulses without dropping voltage below the system reset threshold. Battery drain profile analysis thus prevents unexpected shutdown cycles when the module initiates wireless transmission under weak signal conditions.
System Limit
Profile accuracy depends on the temperature of the testing environment. Low temperatures increase the internal impedance of the battery, which changes the actual drain characteristics compared to room-temperature lab measurements.
