Meaning
A set of digital instructions in printed circuit board fabrication specifies the exact location, size, and tool requirements for all holes drilled into the board substrate. Exporting Gerber drill files is a critical step in the handover from the computer-aided design environment to the manufacturing line. These coordinates dictate where the automated drilling machinery penetrates the glass-reinforced epoxy laminate during board production.
Format Specification
Modern files utilize either the Gerber X2 format or the legacy Excellon format to represent plated and non-plated holes. The Gerber drill files combine coordinate pairs with specific tool selection commands, which ensures that the automated drills use the correct bit diameter for each hole. An offset error in these coordinates will misalign the plated vias with the copper traces and break the electrical connection across layers of the multi-layer board.
Production Validation
Fab house inspections involve rendering the trace layers and the hole coordinates together to check for alignment mismatch. Technicians use software to run the toolpaths before mounting drill bits. Any discrepancy halts the run.
Mechanical Fit
Ensuring that the physical mounting holes and connector pins fit the board housing relies on the accuracy of these files. The Gerber drill files must align perfectly with the mechanical drawing of the plastic enclosure. This prevents mechanical stress on the board-mounted connectors.
