Meaning
Mechanical housing that contains the internal electronics and provides the primary interface for external connections. A host enclosure provides protection for sensitive components from environmental hazards such as moisture, dust, vibration and physical impact. The structure also acts as an electromagnetic shield to contain internal radiation and block external interference.
Thermal Management
Dissipation of heat generated by the processor and power stages often relies on the surface area of the host enclosure. Metal cases may use thermal pads to transfer energy from the silicon directly to the outer skin. Airflow patterns are designed around the internal volume and the placement of vents or heat sinks.
Shielding Performance
Connectivity modules require a host enclosure with high conductivity to maintain a Faraday cage effect. Gaps in the seams or around the ports can compromise the effectiveness of the shield. Conductive gaskets are used to ensure electrical continuity across all parts of the assembly.
The choice of material, such as aluminum or plated plastic, determines the level of attenuation for radio frequency energy.
Mechanical Fit
Alignment of the printed circuit board within the host enclosure is maintained by standoffs and mounting points. Secure fastening prevents vibration from stressing the solder joints or disconnecting internal cables. The enclosure design must account for the tolerances of the components and the assembly process.
