Meaning
Industry standards define the requirements and procedures for notifying customers about major changes in semiconductor products, including design modifications and material switches. The JEDEC JESD46D standard establishes a uniform notification system that chip manufacturers must follow to ensure buyers receive adequate warning before changes are implemented. This process allows system integrators to assess the impact of the modification on their hardware designs.
Customer Notification
Product change notices must contain specific details about the nature of the change, the reasons for it, and the date of first shipment. Compliance with JEDEC JESD46D ensures that information is presented in a standardized format that procurement and engineering departments can quickly evaluate. Manufacturers must issue these notices at least ninety days before the planned introduction of the change.
Qualification Requirement
Evaluation procedures demand that the manufacturer provides qualification data to prove the new revision is functionally equivalent to the old one. If the change is major, such as a die shrink or a transition to a new assembly plant, the customer has the right to request samples for in-house testing before accepting the change. This process protects the buyer from unexpected failures in the field by forcing the supplier to prove reliability under test conditions.
Compliance Scope
Standardized notification covers all commercial semiconductor products. It applies across global supply chains.
