Meaning
Wireless communication protocols attempt to resend data frames when the receiving station fails to acknowledge a successful delivery. These link layer retries provide a localized recovery mechanism that operates much faster than end to end transport layer corrections. The process occurs automatically within the radio hardware or the medium access control software.
Error Recovery
Signal interference or physical obstructions often cause a packet to be corrupted in transit. By initiating link layer retries, the transmitter can overcome momentary fades in the radio link. The maximum number of attempts is usually a configurable parameter that balances reliability against network congestion.
If the frame still fails after the final attempt, the link layer reports an error to the higher software components.
Latency Impact
Every additional transmission adds a delay to the data delivery time. Frequent link layer retries can lead to jitter in real time applications like voice over internet protocol or industrial control loops. In a crowded environment, the wait time between attempts grows as the device performs a backoff algorithm to avoid further collisions.
Energy Consumption
Battery powered devices consume more power when they must send the same information multiple times. Minimizing link layer retries is a primary goal for optimizing the longevity of remote sensors. High retry counts often indicate that the device is at the edge of the range or that the environment has significant electromagnetic noise.
