Meaning
Protective casing made from synthetic resins designed to house electronic components and radio modules. A polymer enclosure provides a lightweight and cost effective solution for protecting a device from dust and moisture. The choice of material affects the thermal management of the system and the radiation pattern of internal antennas.
Thermal Performance
Plastic materials generally act as thermal insulators, which can trap heat inside the device. Designers often add vents or incorporate heat sinks that bridge the internal components to the outer surface. If the power consumption of the processor is high, the material must withstand elevated temperatures without deforming.
Signal Transparency
Wireless signals pass through most plastics with minimal loss, provided the material does not contain metallic fillers or carbon black. Engineers must test the housing to ensure it does not attenuate the radio waves or cause unwanted reflections. This evaluation is critical for devices with integrated antennas where the enclosure is part of the radiating system.
Accurate modeling of the dielectric constant of the plastic is required to predict the final performance of the antenna.
Chemical Resistance
Housing materials must resist degradation from ultraviolet light and common cleaning agents found in the operating environment.
