Meaning
Custom-built mechanical and electronic fixtures used to test assembled printed circuit boards for electrical defects and functional performance are required for quality assurance. The design of a production test jig includes a bed of nails that aligns with specific test points on the circuit board to measure voltages and signal states. This hardware is used immediately after the board’s firmware has been programmed.
Mechanical Design
Precise alignment must be maintained between the fixture pins and the target board to prevent physical damage. In a production test jig, linear guide rails and toggle clamps are used to secure the board during the test sequence. This ensures repeatable contact without bending the pins or scratching the board.
Instrumentation Control
Measurement devices and signal generators are integrated into the testing system to automate the verification process. The production test jig is connected to a computer that runs the test script and logs the results to a factory database. This automated system can run through dozens of individual checks in a few seconds.
Diagnostics Function
Diagnostic information must be presented to the operator when a board fails the test sequence. A production test jig helps isolate the location of short circuits or missing components by displaying the failing test point on a screen. This feedback allows the rework team to quickly fix the board and return it to the production line.
It also identifies recurring assembly defects, which can indicate that a stencil or solder paste printer needs adjustment.
