Meaning
Data link layer protocols within the wireless network stack manage the segmentation, reassembly, and error-free delivery of packet data over the air interface. The radio link control protocol operates directly above the medium access control layer to format data packets for wireless transmission. This layer ensures that the physical channel impairments do not disrupt higher-level transport protocols.
Packet Segmentation
Large packets from the network layer must be broken down to fit into the dynamic size of the radio transport blocks. To achieve this, the radio link control layer segments or concatenates packets to match the payload sizes allocated by the scheduler. This adaptation occurs in real time based on changing channel conditions.
Error Correction
Retransmission of lost or corrupted packets over the radio interface prevents packet loss from reaching the core network. The radio link control protocol detects missing frames and requests immediate retransmission.
Protocol State
Wireless communication modules maintain multiple operational modes to balance transmission speed and processing overhead. The radio link control layer can be configured in acknowledged, unacknowledged, or transparent modes depending on the specific requirements of the service. Acknowledged mode is used for web traffic and file downloads where data integrity is critical, while unacknowledged mode supports real-time voice and video streaming where low latency is preferred.
