Meaning
Physical layer disconnection event occurring when a wireless terminal can no longer maintain a stable connection with the base station. Identification of a radio link failure follows a period of high block error rates or missing synchronization signals from the network. The device then attempts a re-establishment procedure or returns to an idle state to search for new cells.
Signal Degradation
Environmental factors or physical distance from the tower lead to a decline in transmission quality. When the radio link failure occurs, the terminal loses the ability to decode the control channel messages. This loss of synchronization stops all data traffic between the device and the service provider.
Connection Recovery
Recovery involves a specific sequence of random access attempts on neighboring cells. If the radio link failure was caused by a temporary obstruction, the device might reconnect to the same tower quickly. Prolonged failures force the modem to perform a full scan of all supported frequency bands to find a new host.
System Impact
Application performance suffers because the underlying transport layer is no longer available. Frequent radio link failure events indicate a need for higher gain antennas or a change in the physical placement of the equipment.
