Meaning
Verification tests determine the centering error of a retroreflector by rotating the target while measuring its position. The smr runout calibration process identifies if the optical center of the prism matches the physical center of the steel ball. This offset is a common source of hidden error in spatial measurements.
Quality technicians perform this check regularly to maintain the integrity of their data.
Measurement Sequence
A tracker follows the center of the retroreflector as the user rotates it within a fixed nest. The software records the path of the point and calculates the radius of the resulting circle. A perfect target would show zero movement during the rotation.
Accuracy Threshold
Results must stay within the tolerances specified for the particular grade of target being used. High-grade targets allow for very little deviation between the mechanical and optical centers. Any target that exceeds the limit is removed from service to prevent measurement errors.
Component Quality
Scratches on the prism or damage to the spherical housing can increase the measured runout. Regular cleaning and inspection are needed to keep the targets in good condition. The calibration record for each target helps track its performance over its service life.
