Meaning
High purity titanium alloy containing 6 percent aluminum and 4 percent vanadium with extra low interstitial elements. ti-6al-4v grade 23 eli is known for its high fracture toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The reduction of oxygen and nitrogen compared to the standard grade improves its ductility at cryogenic temperatures.
Chemical Composition
Controlling the level of iron and oxygen is the primary method for achieving the ELI designation. In ti-6al-4v grade 23 eli, the oxygen content is typically kept below 0.13 percent to maximize the toughness of the metal. This purity makes the alloy suitable for medical implants and high reliability aerospace structural components.
Mechanical Property
Mechanical properties such as high strength to weight ratios allow for the design of lightweight enclosures that can withstand heavy mechanical loads. The ti-6al-4v grade 23 eli alloy maintains its characteristics across a wide temperature range, from hundreds of degrees down to absolute zero. It exhibits excellent fatigue resistance, which is necessary for parts subjected to cyclic vibration in transit or operation.
The modulus of elasticity is roughly half that of steel, providing a degree of flexibility that can be beneficial in certain mechanical mounts. This alloy resists failure.
Application Envelope
Designers select this grade for pressure vessels and structural frames in satellite systems where weight and reliability are the primary constraints.
