Meaning
Printed circuit board features where a hole is placed directly within a component pad and then filled and plated over allow for higher routing density. This vippo construction enables the placement of vias under the solder balls of fine-pitch ball grid array packages. The flat surface created by the plating ensures a reliable solder connection during the assembly process.
Design Advantage
Routing signals vertically through the pad eliminates the need for dog-bone traces that take up valuable surface area. Using vippo allows designers to place bypass capacitors directly opposite the power pins of a processor. This proximity reduces the parasitic inductance of the power delivery network and improves high-speed performance.
Manufacturing Process
Fabricators fill the drilled hole with a conductive or non-conductive epoxy before applying a final layer of copper. This vippo structure must be perfectly flush with the rest of the pad to prevent voids during soldering. Additional steps in the plating line increase the cost and complexity of the board.
Reliability Standards
Quality control inspections use X-ray and cross-sectioning to verify that the fill is free of air bubbles. Adhering to IPC standards for vippo fabrication ensures that the assembly survives the thermal stresses of life in the field. Uniform filling prevents the structural defects that occur during high-temperature reflow cycles.
