Meaning
Uninterrupted transmission of a radio frequency signal at maximum power provides a stress test for wireless hardware during diagnostic and evaluation phases. In transceiver testing, a continuous transmit burst is used to measure spectral purity, frequency error, and power amplifier stability under prolonged load. It differs from normal packetized operation, which employs brief transmissions and long sleep cycles to save energy.
This test mode is commanded through direct register writes or factory test firmware on the device.
Thermal Dissipation
Heat generation in the power amplifier increases rapidly when the transmitter is run without interruption. Utilizing a continuous transmit burst allows engineers to measure the maximum junction temperature of the transceiver and design adequate thermal pathways on the printed circuit board.
Current Consumption
Power supply rails experience their highest steady-state load during this constant-on state. This allows direct measurement of the maximum current draw of the radio, ensuring that the voltage regulator and battery selection are sufficient for worst-case operating conditions.
Compliance Testing
Regulatory certification requires the evaluation of spurious emissions and band-edge compliance under worst-case transmitter configurations. During these laboratory evaluations, a continuous transmit burst is activated to ensure that the transceiver does not emit interference on adjacent channels or exceed radiated power limits. The test engineer monitors the emission mask with a spectrum analyzer to confirm that the harmonics remain below the legal thresholds.
If the module fails this test, the matching network or the shielding must be redesigned before the product can be cleared for sale.
