Meaning
Build engineering frameworks use strict control over compiler environments to ensure that all build steps are isolated from the host machine. Through hermetic compilation, every compiler tool, library, and system header must be explicitly specified and loaded from within the source workspace. This approach prevents the build process from reading files from paths like usr include or usr lib.
It guarantees that the build outcome is solely a function of the files in the repository.
Environmental Exclusion
The compiler runs in an environment where all external variables are cleared or set to standard values. Under hermetic compilation, variables like PATH or shell configurations are replaced with static paths within the build tree. This exclusion ensures that tools installed on the host operating system cannot interfere with the build process.
It makes the compilation process immune to differences between individual developer workstations.
Output Verification
Identical source files compile to identical binaries under this methodology. Every file is checked against its cryptographic hash before the compilation starts. Since the build does not rely on local system libraries, the output binary has the same bytes on every machine.
This consistency makes it easy to verify the integrity of the compiled artifact by comparing its hash across different builds.
Input Restriction
A hermetic compiler can only see files that are declared as dependencies in the build configuration. It cannot access the network during compilation, which stops the system from dynamically fetching libraries that might change over time. By forcing all inputs to be checked into the source tree or referenced by an immutable hash, the system remains stable and repeatable for years to come.
This discipline is essential for long-term maintenance of safety-critical embedded software. It ensures that any developer can reproduce the exact firmware binary years after the product has launched, without needing to recreate the exact host operating system of that era.
