Meaning
Regulatory frameworks in Japan govern the distribution and operation of wireless transmission equipment to prevent interference and ensure spectrum efficiency. Administrated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the MIC Radio Act mandates that all radio devices sold in the country must obtain technical conformity certification. This law applies to any product emitting radio frequencies, including Bluetooth modules, Wi-Fi chips, and cellular modems.
Regulatory Compliance
Manufacturers must secure official approval before imported products can be sold on the Japanese market. Compliance with the law is indicated by the Giteki mark on the product or its packaging.
Certification Route
There are two primary paths for obtaining conformity under these regulations. First, the test certification route is used for specific, individual units, which is common for low-volume industrial devices. Second, the type certification route is applied to mass-produced equipment, where a representative sample undergoes testing and the approval covers the entire production run.
Testing must be conducted by a registered certification body that is recognized by the government. If the design is modified after certification, the manufacturer must evaluate if the changes require a new filing under the MIC Radio Act.
Technical Standard
Measurements focus on transmitter power and spurious emissions. These limits are designed to prevent foreign devices from disrupting local communications infrastructure.
