Meaning
Control plane protocols operating between user equipment and core network management nodes convey mobility, session management and authentication messages transparently across radio networks. The non access stratum signaling framework handles establishment of user sessions and location updates without involving intermediate base station routing layers. Cellular modems rely on this layer to establish core network connections.
Protocol Control
Core network entities process authentication request messages directly from terminal modems. Messages within non access stratum signaling pass through base stations inside access stratum envelopes without modification by radio towers.
Session Management
Mobility management state machines coordinate network attach procedures, identity verification and tracking area updates. Operating non access stratum signaling enables devices to negotiate IP address allocations, quality of service profiles and power saving mode timers with the mobility management entity. Signal encryptions and integrity protections shield these control transfers from over-the-air tampering.
Proper state transitions prevent unexpected network detaches and unbilled data session drops.
Layer Boundary
Functional boundaries of control messaging stop at the interface between mobility controllers and access stratum radio drivers. Protocols within non access stratum signaling delegate physical channel establishment, handover execution and radio signal measurements to underlying radio access layers. Malformed control frames result in immediate core network rejection codes and lost device connectivity.
