Meaning
Measurement system resolution metric represents the number of non-overlapping groups that a measurement process can reliably distinguish within the total process variation. The number of distinct categories ndc must be evaluated to ensure that a test setup is capable of monitoring and controlling a production process. An ndc value of five or greater is generally required for a measurement system to be considered acceptable.
Measurement Resolution
A low value indicates that the measurement system cannot distinguish between the normal variations of the process and the noise of the measurement tool itself. If the measurement system is not capable, it cannot be used for statistical process control because it will produce misleading data. This metric is calculated during a gage repeatability and reproducibility study.
Process Variation
Increasing the number of samples or using more precise measuring instruments can improve this metric. This is done to make sure the measurement system is adequate.
Gage Capability
When the metric is high, it confirms that the tool can easily identify when the process is drifting out of specification. This enables operators to make adjustments before defective parts are produced. The calculated value must be documented in the equipment qualification report.
