Meaning
Radiating subsystems consisting of multiple low profile metallic elements mounted on a grounded substrate provide directional beam patterns for wireless communication. A patch antenna array occupies minimal volume, making it suitable for integration into the flat surfaces of consumer electronics or vehicle panels. Each element contributes to the overall gain and radiation characteristics.
Element Spacing
Distances between individual patches are usually kept at approximately half a wavelength to prevent the formation of unwanted grating lobes. When a patch antenna array is designed for high frequency operation, the physical spacing is only a few millimeters. Proper arrangement ensures that the main beam remains steerable without loss of efficiency.
Beamforming Control
Phase shifters connected to each element allow the electronic steering of the signal toward a specific user or base station. In a patch antenna array, the constructive and destructive interference of the waves creates a concentrated beam. This capability increases the link margin in high frequency networks.
Housing Integration
Placement behind a plastic cover requires tuning to account for the dielectric loading of the enclosure material. The efficiency of a patch antenna array drops if the clearance to the nearest metal part is insufficient. Design verification includes testing the assembly in an anechoic chamber to confirm that the final radiation pattern matches the simulated model after all mechanical components are in place.
