Meaning
Electromagnetic protection metrics measure the ability of a material or enclosure to block and absorb radio frequency signals. In hardware integration, shielding attenuation represents the ratio of the incident electromagnetic field to the field that penetrates the shield. This parameter is expressed in decibels and indicates how effectively a metal can or conductive gasket isolates a sensitive module from external noise.
A high attenuation value ensures that internal circuits do not emit unwanted signals and are not affected by external electromagnetic fields. It is a critical specification during the design of co-located radios where a Bluetooth chip might otherwise interfere with a nearby cellular receiver.
Testing Method
Evaluating this metric involves placing the shielding material between a transmitter antenna and a receiver antenna inside a controlled chamber. Technicians measure the signal strength with and without the shield to calculate the shielding attenuation directly. This test runs across a wide range of frequencies because the shielding effectiveness varies with wavelength.
The collected data determines if the enclosure meets the noise isolation specifications of the product design.
Material Quality
The choice of material and surface finish affects the baseline performance of the shield. While solid metals like copper provide excellent shielding attenuation, they add weight and cost to the final product. Lightweight conductive plastics are often selected, but they must be carefully tested to ensure they do not degrade over time.
Maintaining a tight mechanical seal at the joints prevents RF leakage.
Design Tradeoff
Integrating these shields requires balancing electromagnetic isolation with thermal dissipation and weight. Holes and gaps for cooling or cable access will reduce the shielding attenuation significantly. Engineers use slot antennas and specialized mesh designs to maintain thermal airflow while blocking RF noise.
This trade-off is resolved during the prototype testing phase before the tooling for the enclosure is finalized.
